Blog: How to Successfully Join a League with Your Coworkers

Blog: How to Successfully Join a League with Your Coworkers

Have you ever wondered how to join a league with your coworkers WITHOUT it getting weird? You see these people every day, but how well do you really know them? How do you know they’ll be fun to play sports with? What if you have one of those secretly competitive people in your office that completely changes the team environment for you?

First of all, we’d like to say… just do it! Joining a league with your coworkers is an awesome way to get to know them better and create relationships outside of the office. Let those fears go and get started with your team. Just keep these tips in mind.

  1. Choose a sport that everyone can participate in. If your office is full of all-star basketball players, then that’s perfect for you. But if you have a mix of athletic people, competitive people, uncoordinated people, and people who aren’t big into sports (more likely), then it’s best to go with something such as kickball or bar games - there’s something for everyone.
  2. Join the right skill level. We have three different levels: A, Competitive; B, Intermediate; and C, Social/Recreational. Because most offices look to join a league for the fun, social aspect, we typically recommend C. But hey, if your office is full of really competitive people, then why not try out A?!
  3. Make sure everyone’s joining for the right reason. Talk to your team members and make sure you all have the same priorities, whether that’s competition, to let out some steam each week, or get to know each other better. Set expectations early on.
  4. Make it a priority. You and your team will get as much out of the league as you put in it. If you make it a priority and stay committed to making it to games and cheering each other on, you’ll have the best season. If your team loses momentum a few games in and people stop showing up to games, trust us when we say you won’t be having much fun.
  5. Get the entire team involved. Even if you’re not able to get all of your coworkers on a team, it’s always more fun when you’re all a part of it. Invite those that aren’t on your team to come watch some games, keep the rest of your coworkers updated on how you’re doing, and invite people to join a league next season. It might sound cheesy, but sports can truly bring your team together.
