Flag Football is a great way to get out and have some fun with friends, even if you’re not a pro. Rules for the game can sometimes get a little confusing if you aren’t a hardcore fan or have never played in your past. That’s why we created a beginner’s guide to flag football just for you!
Here’s everything you need to know before signing up:
Both teams get chances to score. When your team has the ball, you must keep getting first downs until you make it to the endzone at the end of the field.
To get a first down, you must cross the marker that is 20 yards away from where your ball was on that first down. You get 4 chances to get there. If you don’t make it in 4 plays, you must give the other team the ball to let them try going the other way. If you can’t make first downs or score, you should probably reconsider who is throwing the football for your team.
When you aren’t on offense, you will be trying to stop the other team. Don’t let them get first downs by intercepting the ball or taking their flag from them. The goal on defense is to not let them in the endzone behind you as they push the ball down the field. If they score, you may have failed your job, but you get a chance to score on them. Redemption time.
If the defense does a good job, the offense can elect to punt the ball to the other team. You do this if you don’t think you can get the 1st down on your last attempt. You can either kick the ball to them making them start further back on the field or have them start 25 yards back from where the ball is. If you choose to kick it, you better have a great kicker!
Lucky for you, we’ve decided to open up some novice leagues, meaning you can walk onto the field having never played a game in your life and still have fun. This is perfect for people who are looking for new ways to get active, meet new people, and have fun!
You can join as an individual or with a team. If you join as an individual, we guarantee we’ll find you a team full of others looking for the same thing. All you have to do is sign up and be ready for an awesome season.
Ready to sign up? (We know you are!) Start here, find an open league labeled “novice,” and sign up as a team or individual. We’re so pumped for you!
